Equipping youth with skills

A GROUP of 71 young people in the Harry Gwala district graduated from various skills programmes provided by the Department of Social Development (DSD) in KwaZulu-Natal on March 6.

The graduation ceremony in Ixopo was attended by KZN Department of Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga, Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality mayor Elizabeth Ngubo, Harry Gwala District Municipality deputy mayor Nosisa Jojozi, Harry Gwala District Municipality speaker Sibongiseni Mdunge and other stakeholders.

As the KZN DSD continues to roll out similar initiatives, MEC Shinga reaffirmed the department’s commitment to youth empowerment.

Speaking at the event, Shinga highlighted the department’s commitment to equipping young people with skills that enhance their employability and economic participation.

“This programme is a testament to our province’s dedication to youth empowerment. Through strategic partnerships, we are ensuring that young people, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds, gain the skills they need to become self-reliant and active contributors to our economy,” she said.

The initiative forms part of the department’s Integrated Youth Development Strategy, which focuses on youth mobilisation, vocational training and entrepreneurship.

Two young people from the Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality have already secured jobs in the security sector.

“Our goal is to ensure that these young people do not just receive training but transition into meaningful employment or business ventures. Seeing some of our graduates secure jobs is a clear indication that we are on the right path,” MEC Shinga added.

The success of the programme was made possible through partnerships with key stakeholders.
