KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Mrs. Nonhlanhla Khoza led OPERATION SIGALELEKILE in Mahhehle area under Ward 1 of Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality, Ixopo. The government outreach programme included integration of services by Home Affairs, Social Development, Agriculture, Human Settlements, Health, South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), National Development Agency, Statistics SA, SAPS, Harry Gwala District in response to the needs of residents.
Families who lost their loved ones in Mahhehle massacre in 1994 are still dealing with their grief in different ways. A total of 14 people were massacred in the area. The MEC had an opportunity to meet the families of the victim during OPERATION SIGALELEKILE where government departments brought services in the backyard of the community. Matric learners were able to apply for IDs while parents apply for birth certificates of their children. A number of people also had an opportunity to access SASSA services and be able to check the status of their grant applications. The Department of Health also conducted Covid-19 vaccination on-site. Operation Sigalelekile is one of the KwaZulu-Natal Social Development interventions to help the needy communities members.
