About Us

Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality is located in the southern part of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and encompasses the towns of Ixopo and Highflats. It is known for its beautiful landscapes that include rolling hills, grasslands, and wetlands, making it ideal for agri-tourism and outdoor activities like canoeing and river rafting along the Mkhomazi and Umzimkhulu Rivers. The municipality is rich in history, including connections to Alan Paton's novel Cry, the Beloved Country, which was set in Ixopo.

Ubuhlebezwe's economy is driven largely by agriculture, with key industries including forestry, citrus farming, sugar cane production, and livestock farming. It has also developed a range of services to support local businesses and residents, including infrastructure development, public services, and policies aimed at enhancing community life.

For administrative purposes, the municipal council is made up of 27 members, with 18 seats currently held by the African National Congress (ANC) following the most recent elections.
